Cosmos Key Features


Cosmos is a decentralized network of independent parallel blockchains, each supported by a BFT consensus algorithm. The goal of Cosmos is for each blockchain to be interoperable with one another. These blockchains remain self-sovereign and process transactions quickly, all while communicating with other blockchains in the ecosystem via IBC (Inter-Blockchain Communication) protocol.

Instant Finality

Cosmos’ Tendermint consensus algorithm enables instant finality. Forks that slow down transactions in traditional Proof of Work systems are avoided, as long as more than one third of validators are honest. Users can rest assured that their transactions are finalized as soon as a block is created.

Public and Private Functionality

Tendermint enables networking and consensus, across both public and private blockchains. A permissionless, public blockchain is possible when random validators are elected based on their tokens at stake - Proof of Stake (PoS). A private and permissioned blockchain can be built when a pre-authorized set of entities can be validators. Developers can decide which one they want to build on Cosmos.

  • With Blockdaemon, you can run a Cosmos validator node or stake to our public validator node. To run your own Cosmos validator node, send us a message and we’ll be happy to set you up.

  • Staking the Cosmos native asset ATOM isn’t without risks. If a validator goes down or doesn’t perform well, that validator’s ATOM may be forfeited. Having a well performing validator is necessary to ensure return on investment and reduce the risks of slashing.

  • Staking rewards are generated and distributed to ATOM holders through two ways. The first way is through transaction fees collected on the Cosmos Hub. The second way is through newly minted ATOM. The total supply of ATOM is inflated to reward stakers.

  • Tendermint is both a consensus engine and a BFT consensus algorithm used by Cosmos. State-machines can be built in any programming language on top of Tendermint, which takes care of replicating it.

  • IBC is an interoperability protocol for communicating arbitrary data between arbitrary state machines. It is currently a safe and secure means of moving assets across blockchains, unlocking interoperability. Evmos and Osmosis are two of the more well known IBC compatible chains.
