Polkadot Key Features


Substrate, Polkadot’s underlying technology, allows anyone to build their own blockchain to be interoperable with other blockchains built on Polkadot. These individual blockchains are known as parachain. Any Substrate parachain is natively compatible with Polkadot, allowing data and value to be transferred seamlessly between blockchains. These chains can also link with external networks such as Ethereum and Bitcoin through bridges.


Polkadot uses nominated proof-of-stake to achieve consensus. Validators are responsible for securing the main Polkadot Relay Chain, which is at the heart of connecting all parachains together. This guarantees aggregate, shared security, providing consensus for the entire platform.


Voting on Polkadot protocol upgrades takes place via. on-chain voting. However, custom rules can be created for any parachain launched using Polkadot. Substrate allows bespoke functionality to be baked into any blockchain launched using it.

Blockchain Package Manager (BPM) for Polkadot

BPM provides tools and packages to run blockchain nodes on your own infrastructure using a unified simple command line interface to deploy, maintain, monitor, and upgrade nodes. Substrate API Sidecar Available

Any full node can be equipped with the API Sidecar, allowing users to fetch fully decoded blocks, get the balance of an address atomically (i.e. with a corresponding block number), get the chain's metadata, get a transaction fee prediction and information needed for auditing, and submit transactions to a node's transaction queue.

  • Just log into our Self-Serve App and go to Nodes section. Once there, select Polkadot to begin purchasing your node.

  • Successfully elected validators, upon completing their work, receive a service fee (validator fee), with the remaining rewards distributed to their nominators (those who delegated to the validator). Rewards are automatically distributed.

  • Nominated proof of stake (NPoS) is different from standard PoS networks as validators are nominated to mint blocks. Nominators (DOT token holders) do this by publishing a list of validator candidates that they trust, and putting down an amount of DOT at stake to support them. By nominating a successfully elected validator, the nominator receives a share of the rewards given to the validator for performing their work. Unlike traditional PoS systems, Polkadot grants validators equal voting power in consensus. This means that no party is overrepresented or underrepresented, proportional to their stake.

  • Those acting as validators enable transactions across parachains by adding new blocks to the main Relay Chain. They ensure the information contained in blocks is valid. The only risk that exists is a validator not complying with the consensus algorithms, removing a portion of the validator’s DOT. This incentivizes good performance. Validators are elected a couple of times per day.
